- British rule over Papua is transferred to Australia. In 1884 the Australian colonies had been hostile to the establishment of German New Guinea (north-eastern New Guinea) and pressured Britain to acquire Papua (south-eastern New Guinea) soon after.
- Roald Amundsen traverses the North West Passage and determines the position of the Magnetic North Pole.
- World's first feature film The story of the Kelly Gang is made in Australia by the Tait brothers.
- Finland is the first country in Europe to grant women the right to vote and is the first country in the world to grant women the right to be electoral candidates.
