At the end of 1927 Menzies announces his intention to nominate for the
seat of East Yarra Province in the 1928 Victorian State election.

Federal Parliament moves from Melbourne to Canberra.
On May 9 the first session of Commonwealth Parliament in Canberra is opened
by HRH Prince Albert, the Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George
VI) accompanied by the Duchess.
Dame Nellie Melba greeted the official party by singing the national anthem
on the steps of the provisional Parliament House (now known as Old Parliament
House).

A cyclone and floods in Cairns claim 36 lives with 20 people missing in

hits Sydney and the NSW coast.

The Duke and Duchess of York in an open carriage, Melbourne 20
Captain Charles Lindberg, a 25 year old American pilot, makes the first
solo flight across the Atlantic from New York to Paris. The Ryan NYP monoplane
Spirit of St Louis made the 3,600 mile flight in 33 hours 39 minutes
averaging a speed of 107.5 mph.

breaks the world land speed record in his car Bluebird reaching
a speed of 174.224 mph, in Wales.
